Help Students in the South San Francisco Stay Connected and Thrive this School Year

Just miles away from the world’s leading life sciences cluster, the South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) is rushing to implement both a distance and hybrid learning model that will rely heavily on students and staff having consistent access to district supported devices and reliable internet to engage in a digital learning environment and provide families with educational options to navigate the challenges of the on-going pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has widened the digital divide, a divide that disproportionately affects low-income students of color

Of the approximately 8,500 students enrolled in SSFUSD:

  • 21% are English language learners
  • 43% are eligible for free or reduced meals

UPDATE: Genentech has extended their match corporate donations 2:1 (up to $500,000) through September 30!

Digital resources are critical so that no students are left behind

Up to 30% of schoolchildren as many as 16 million American kids — lack internet access or laptops for online learning, a study by Common Sense Media.

CNN recently published an article (July 20, 2020) titled "We need to address the digital divide causing an educational crisis" bringing additional light and consideration to this growing need.

The district must raise $2.3M to purchase almost 7,000 devices (iPads, Chromebooks and MacBooks) to enable students and teachers to operate in an emerging digital learning environment.
